Not many people realize it, but there are about 14,000 asylum seekers and refugees living in Indonesia. They are waiting and hoping to be resettled in Australia, the US, the UK, or another safe country. While they wait—on average about 4 years—they can neither work nor enroll in school. What they can do is worry, become depressed, slide further into poverty, and fall further behind as the rest of the world moves on without them.
“We are really lucky,” said one single mother of three young boys, who lost her husband to bombing in Pakistan, “you come here just to help us.” In spite of limited class space, material resources, air conditioning or other comforts, the participants do have the most important thing of all: People who care about them. At RLC, we believe that no significant learning occurs outside of significant relationships.
We also believe that learning starts right where you are. No matter at what level of English participants begin the program, our goal is to support them to move up one level within a year. Using internationally renowned curricula and assessments from Cambridge University, RLC hopes to raise enough funds to pay for each participant to sit an official Cambridge exam. Passing a Cambridge exam provides a meaningful certificate that is recognized in countries around the world.
Cost: $45 per child up to $90 per high school student or adult.
